Ukraine Energy Support Fund: October achievements and impact
In October 2024, the Ukraine Energy Support Fund (UESF) received substantial contributions amounting to a toal of EUR 191.6 million, with generous donations from the European Union, KfW on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, and private sector partners.
From these funds, a total of EUR 40.2 million was spent to procure vital equipment for Ukraine's energy infrastructure, including transformers, gas turbines, and electricity distribution equipment, all of which are essential for strengthening Ukraine’s electricity generation, transmission, and gas transmission sectors. Notably, 54% of the funds were directed toward purchasing gas/steam turbines, along with investments in switchgear (4%) and passive protection (2%).
The UESF was established to mitigate the impact of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, providing rapid financial support for urgent restoration efforts. In 2024, before the most recent wave of attacks, Ukraine had already lost over 9 GW of installed generation capacity, leading to frequent rolling blackouts and unplanned power outages. These challenges worsened following the latest attacks, further straining the energy sector and affecting millions of Ukrainians.
