Natural gas
Overview
WHAT IS IT
Natural gas is a major part of Europe’s energy mix, providing around a quarter of its total energy use. It powers electricity generation, supports industrial activity, and heats homes and buildings — especially during colder months. Thanks to its flexibility and storage options, gas can be delivered efficiently via pipelines or as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Most Energy Community Contracting Parties already use gas similarly to EU Member States, benefiting from their connection to the broader European market.
WHY IT MATTERS
Natural gas helps reduce emissions compared to coal, improving air quality and contributing to a healthier environment. It supports renewable energy by stepping in when solar or wind power is low, ensuring homes stay warm and powered. A connected regional gas market also means more stable prices and better access to energy across borders — benefiting citizens through greater reliability, affordability, and cooperation.
